MCP and AI tools

The Smartsheet Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server enables you to manage projects and Smartsheet data from within Smart Assist and AI assistants, such as Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Gemini Enterprise Plus, Cursor, and others. 

Smart Assist requires a Pro, Business, Enterprise, or Advanced Work Management plan.

MCP-enabled AI tools require a Business, Enterprise, or Advanced Work Management plan.

When you're in Smartsheet using Smart Assist or working in an external AI tool (AI tool) connected to the Smartsheet MCP Server, you can use natural language to automate tasks, manage project data, and collaborate more efficiently.

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that enables AI systems to safely connect to external data sources and tools. It’s like a secure bridge between AI and your business applications–in this case, Smartsheet. Instead of manually copying data between Smartsheet and AI or performing repetitive tasks, MCP allows AI to interact directly with Smartsheet.

Get started with the Smartsheet MCP Server

Here are some of the ways you can get started using Smartsheet with AI:

  • To open Smart Assist, open a sheet (in Table, Gantt, Board, or Timeline view) or a report (in Timeline view), and select the AI sparkle icon  AI sparkle icon in purple  located at the top-right corner of the screen.
  • Access Smartsheet using a Smartsheet MCP Server Connector in one of these AI assistants:
  • Want to use a different AI tool? Install the Smartsheet MCP Server in an MCP-compliant AI tool, like Cursor, Codex, Gemini CLI, and others.
  • Go to the Smartsheet MCP prompt library for 100+ examples of gaining insight and taking action with natural language. 
  • To set up Smartsheet MCP as a coding tool, go to Quickstart. It demonstrates Claude Code setup and querying AI to get your sheet structure, so you can code sheet updates. (These connection principles work across MCP-compatible AI tools.)
