Access Smartsheet in ChatGPT

Query and operate on your Smartsheet data conversationally using the Smartsheet Connector for ChatGPT and the ChatGPT mobile app

The Smartsheet Connector for ChatGPT allows you to use natural language to manage your Smartsheet work within the following OpenAI applications: ChatGPT and the ChatGPT mobile app. In your OpenAI chat application, you can update tasks, flag risks, and run audits by describing what you need. You can pull status across projects, create new sheets with starter tasks, and use discussions to drive decisions—all through conversation.

ChatGPT's Deep Research capability allows you to synthesize key information from sheets, reports, and dashboards throughout your workspaces and generate comprehensive reports, complete with inline citations.

This article describes the prerequisites for using the Smartsheet Connector and demonstrates how to configure the connector in your OpenAI chat application.

Prerequisites

AI and MCP server access are enabled for Smartsheet organizations by default. Unless your Smartsheet system admin disabled AI or MCP server access, you're ready to configure the connector.

The following criteria must be met for you to use the Smartsheet Connector in OpenAI chat applications:

  • Smartsheet Business, Enterprise, or Advanced Work Management plan
  • AI and MCP server access must not be disabled in Smartsheet for your organization. Note, AI and MCP server access are enabled by default.

Connect to Smartsheet

  1. In your OpenAI chat application, such as ChatGPT or the ChatGPT mobile app, go to Settings and select Apps. The apps page appears.
  2. Find the Smartsheet app for your region: Smartsheet US, Smartsheet EU, or Smartsheet AU.

  3. Select the Connect option next to the Smartsheet app you selected. An authorization window appears.

    Note: You authenticate with the Smartsheet MCP Server via OAuth.

  4. Authorize your OpenAI chat application to connect with Smartsheet. Your OpenAI chat application is now connected to Smartsheet.
  5. Start a new chat.
  6. In the chat interface, select the plus icon and select the Smartsheet application.

In your current chat conversation, you can interact with your Smartsheet data.
