The Free plan is a discontinued capability that offers limited task and project management.
USM Content
The Free plan is no longer available to new Smartsheet signups as of August 28, 2024. If you already have a Free plan, your access continues, and your plan limits remain the same; nothing changes for you. If you're a new user looking to get started, Smartsheet currently offers a free trial and several paid plans.
This article documents the capabilities and limits of the Free plan for existing Free plan users.
Free plan vs. free trial —what's the difference?
These two things are easy to mix up, but they work differently:
- Free plan: An ongoing plan with limited functionality, available to users who had it before August 28, 2024. It doesn't expire.
- Free trial: A 30-day trial of Smartsheet's full feature set, available to new signups. When the trial ends, your sheets become read-only for 30 days, then get deleted unless you upgrade.
If you signed up recently and are seeing a trial countdown or expiry notice, you're on the free trial, not the Free plan. See Smartsheet free trial FAQs for details on what happens when your trial ends and how to cancel if needed.

Free plan FAQ
Does the Free plan expire?
No, the Free plan doesn't have an expiration date for users who already have it. If you're seeing an expiry notice or a countdown, you're on the free trial, not the Free plan. See Smartsheet free trial FAQs.
Do sheets shared with me count toward my two-sheet limit?
No. The two-sheet limit applies only to sheets you own. Sheets that other users share with you don't count against your limit, and you can collaborate on them without affecting your plan.
Can I sign up for the Free plan?
No. The Free plan hasn't been available to new users since August 28, 2024. New users can start with a free trial or choose a paid plan.
How do I cancel the free trial?
If you signed up for the free trial and want to cancel before it ends, see Smartsheet free trial FAQs for cancellation steps.
My trial expired. What happens to my sheets?
When a trial expires, your sheets become read-only for 30 days. After 30 days, they're deleted. To keep your sheets, upgrade to a paid plan before the 30-day window closes. You can also transfer ownership or export your sheets in the meantime:
I only have two sheets, but they're showing as read-only. Why?
This usually means your account is on the free trial rather than the Free plan, and the trial has expired. When a trial expires, all sheets go read-only regardless of how many you have. Check the plan status shown in your account settings to confirm which plan you're on. If your Free plan was unexpectedly changed to a trial, contact Smartsheet Support. They can investigate the account change.
My Free plan was changed to a trial without me doing anything. What should I do?
This isn't expected behavior. If your account was migrated back to trial status from the Free plan, contact Smartsheet Support and let them know when it happened and what your account looked like before. They can review the account history and restore your status.
How do I switch to a paid plan from the Free plan?
Go to the Smartsheet Pricing page to compare plans and upgrade. See also Upgrade or add seats to your Smartsheet plan.
How do I change which of my sheets are editable?
Delete one of your current editable sheets to free up a slot, then make a different sheet editable. Or upgrade to a paid plan to increase the number of sheets you can work with.
