Frequently asked questions

What is the Global Updates feature?

With Global Updates, you can configure, test, and push out updates to project templates or profile data and then cascade those changes automatically to existing projects. Apply changes to specific projects or across an entire portfolio.

How do I access the Global Update feature?

You must be a Program Lead in the Control Center configuration to apply Global Updates.

To apply Global Updates, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to Control Center.
  2. Select the three-line Menu icon on the top right.
  3. Select the program to update.
  4. Select Global Updates > New Update.
  5. Select the type of Global Update.
  6. Follow the Global Update wizard to complete the update.

Use the Create & Run button to test your changes before pushing them out to all your projects.

What types of Global Updates can I make?

The goal of Global Updates is to help maintain consistency across existing and new projects. Different types of Global Updates are available:

  • Add New Column
  • Modify Existing Column
  • Add Profile Data
  • Find/Replace
  • Update Reports
  • Update Dashboards

Do I have to update all my projects?

No. During the Apply Update stage, you can choose which projects you want to update. Once it’s complete, the update shows a status of Partially Applied to indicate that it didn’t include every project.

If an update is Partially Applied, when is it considered Applied?

The Global Update appears as Applied when you have pushed the updates to all the projects in the Apply Update list, which includes all existing projects at the time of the update.

Can I make changes to projects that were not created using Control Center?

No. The Global Updates feature only supports projects that were created using Control Center.

If I make changes to my project source templates, does that automatically apply to all existing projects?

No, any changes you make directly to the project source templates only affect new provisioned projects. To update all existing projects, you must use the Global Update feature.

What is Find/Replace, and how do I use it?

Find/Replace lets you update values and formulas in cells across all your existing project sheets and templates. You can use advanced options to control which cells to update.

For more information and all steps to follow, see Control Center Global Updates: Find/Replace.

Can I edit an existing Global Update?

No. You can’t edit a Global Update after passing the Apply Test screen. Before that, you can go back and edit the update, test it, and apply it when you’re ready.

Some projects have custom modifications on their dashboards. Can these modifications be lost?

Yes. When a dashboard in a project is updated, all the widgets are removed and re-created to be identical to the template dashboard.

I renamed the dashboard in my project. Can Global Updates still find and update it?

No. If you rename your dashboard, you’d have to remove the previous dashboard and add the new one as a new template to the blueprint. Use the blueprint builder by navigating to the Source Template Settings section.

Adding the new dashboard doesn’t remove the original dashboard that was renamed from the project folder until you manually remove it. Complete this step after you’ve updated the blueprint.

After that, run a Global Update to add the new dashboard to existing projects. Then, run another Global Update Update Dashboards to ensure that all the data is refreshed and reflected properly.

I manually added a dashboard and renamed it to match. Can Global Updates recognize it?

No. Global Updates can only recognize dashboards, reports, and sheets that were created through Control Center.

I deleted the dashboard. Can Global Updates add it back?

The project appears in the No matching dashboards found section. Select the project in Global Updates > Choose Dashboard > Add new dashboard. Run the update to create the dashboard.

Can I see all my projects?

Yes. Unlike earlier Global Updates, you can see all projects created from the blueprint.

Can I run a Global Update again?

Yes. You can run the update as many times as you want.

Can I undo a Global Update?

No. You can adjust the template report in the blueprint source folder and run the Global Update again.

I’ve made manual changes to some reports. Do I lose those changes?

Yes. Global Updates overwrites those changes, so the project report matches the report template.

I renamed the report in my project. Can Global Updates still find it and update it?

No. If you rename your report, you’d have to remove the previous report and add the new one as a new template to the blueprint. Use the blueprint builder by navigating to the Source Template Settings section.

Adding the new report doesn’t remove the original report that was renamed from the project folder until you manually remove it. Complete this step after you’ve updated the blueprint.

After that, run a Global Update to add the new dashboard to existing projects. Then, run another Global Update Update Reports to ensure that all the data is refreshed and reflected properly.

After you’ve completed those steps, make sure to also update any dashboards in your template to ensure they reflect the new report. You can then run a Global Update Update Dashboards to refresh the data.

I manually added a report and renamed it to match. Can Global Updates recognize it?

No. Global Updates only recognizes reports and sheets created through Control Center.

I deleted the report. Can Global Updates add it back?

The project appears in the No matching reports found section. Select the project in Global Updates, select Choose Report, and then select Add new report. Run the update to create the report.

Can I see all my projects?

Yes. Global Updates shows you all the projects created from the blueprint.
