Customize the format of your chart

You can change the formatting options on a chart, including fonts for titles and legends, chart type, and more.

Edit a chart

  1. Select Edit in the top right corner of the dashboard.
  2. Hover over the chart widget select the More icon > Edit.

Formatting options

To do this

Follow these steps

Switch how columns and rows are plotted on your chart for a different view of the data

Select Switch rows/columns

Chart only on certain columns from the selected range.

Select Columns Included and select only the columns you want to display.

Change the chart type

Select the tile of the chart type that you want to use

Add a title to your chart

Expand the Title section and enter your title

  • When adding a title, make sure the Show Title toggle is turned on. 
  • To change the format of a title, use the formatting buttons to make changes to that title
Add a title to your axes

Expand the Horizontal Axis or Vertical Axis sections, as needed

  • Enter your title
  • To change the format of a title, use the formatting buttons to make changes to that title

Add or move a legend on your chart

Expand the Legend section and select one of the following options:

  • No Legend
  • Top
  • Right
  • Bottom
  • Left

 Use the formatting buttons to make changes to the legend.

Add gridlines to your chart (except pie charts)

Expand the Horizontal Axis or Vertical Axis sections and enable the Show tick mark lines toggle

Labels slices of a pie or donut chart with percentage of the whole or actual values

Expand the Pie Chart or Donut Chart section, and use the dropdown under Value Labels to select one of the following:

  • Hide
  • Percentage (%)
  • Amount 

Change the colors of data or add labels to data plotted in your chart

Expand the Series section and choose which item to apply formatting to.

By default, white text appears on dark background, black text appears on light backgrounds.

Ignore the text labels that you’ve typed in the cells of your table

Check the box for Use column names as category labels under the Data & Chart Type section.

Edit the interaction of the widget (interaction is what happens when you click the widget)

Select Widget Behavior and choose one of the interaction options:

  • Take no action
  • Open the data source
  • Open another site...
  • Open a Smartsheet item...

Pie and Donut charts: display as a half-pie or half-donut

Expand the Pie Chart & Series section and enable the Display as semicircle toggle.
