Password complexity requirements

Learn the essential password requirements to prevent setup issues and keep your Smartsheet account secure.

Who can use this?

Plans:

  • Smartsheet

These requirements apply to all new passwords, including initial account setup and any password reset or change. If you can't save your new password, it means you haven't met one or more of the criteria below.

These requirements are strictly enforced, but Smartsheet doesn't display specific details about why your password doesn't comply (this prevents potential security vulnerabilities from being exposed). Before continuing with the password setup process, make sure you’re meeting all the requirements.

Length

Each password must contain a minimum of 10 characters.

Avoid common patterns

Dictionary words

Don't use simple or common words on their own, such as password or monkey, and similar common words.

Predictable sequences

Avoid common logical sequences, such as 123456 or abcdef, and similar predictable patterns.

Predictable substitutions

Simple substitutions, like @ for a or 3 for e, aren't sufficient on their own. For instance, p@ssword isn't allowed, and neither are similar variations of common words.

Still having trouble?

If you've checked all the requirements above and still can't save your password, try these tips:

  • Use a longer passphrase and combine several unrelated words together (for example, correct-horse-battery-staple).
  • Avoid including any part of your username or email address in your password.
  • Make sure your password doesn't reuse patterns from a previous password.
